Feature – Super Duper Things

Louise is a very talented design student, from Norwich, UK and her store on Etsy is called “Super Duper Things” (which may I say is a fantastic name for a shop!).

Hope you enjoy this little Q and A – It’s my first try at doing this on Ammiki.

How would you describe your style?

I would probably describe it as eclectic, and then I would probably give up! It’s hard to describe your own stuff. Neutral colours, mixed media, obsessed with stags and chain?

How do you come-up with these gorgeous creations?

My creative process is quite chaotic (I’d be so ashamed if you could see my desk as it is normally!) and usually starts from finding an object, component or chain in a charity shop or flea market, and a piece evolves around it. I usually know exactly what I’m going to do the moment I see it, but sometimes just muddling around the materials that I’ve got reveals combinations that I like.

Where do you gain inspiration from? Example it could be books, a favorite place, sights, your home-town, sounds etc

Lots of things inspire me – the raw materials and components, things I see on friends, eye-candy from the internet, or just walking around the little town where I live. I have a very short design attention-span, which is why the shop is mostly full of one-offs and a total jumble of items. Sometimes things just come into my head (especially when I’m just dropping off to sleep – although these ideas are often just rubbish in the morning!)

Lets just say other design students see this, can you suggest to them the benefits in selling their work online?

It’s so easy, all you need is the internet and a camera, and the experience of presenting yourself successfully online is INVALUABLE when you graduate!

What have you found the most challenging thing in selling your works online?

The worst bit is getting that message that says ‘My package hasn’t turned up yet, what can you do?’. Being at the mercy of airmail is pretty much living on the edge! That’s all, really.

What’s you’re best piece of advice for selling work online?

I know that everyone always says ‘just be true to yourself’, but if you just make original designs that you would buy yourself and have fun while you do it, you’ll go far! People can tell when you’re having a great time doing what you do.

And lastly, the Author Barba Sher has a quote “Whatever you’re dreams are, start taking them seriously”. What’s your dreams for Super Duper Things”?

Just to carry on as is, really! I love the freedom to just make one thing if I feel like it and sell it directly to someone on my own terms. My only dreams are to have a trained monkey to take my packages to the post office…
